About Brant United Way

Family Counselling Centre of Brant › The Smiths

Healthy people, strong communities.

Change starts in our community when families and individuals have the courage to use the programs and services offered in Brantford, Brant County and Six Nations of the Grand River, many of which are supported by Brant United Way. Together, we continue to support healthy people and build strong communities.

The Smith's were a close family with twin teenagers Alice and Steve. When the couple decided they needed time apart to put their relationship into perspective, it directly affected the twins and the family relationship, especially between Steve and his father.

Steve was more of a dreamer and a loaner unlike his sister who was outgoing and heavily involved in school. He shared many similar interests with his mom, who he was much closer to. Steve began to blame his father for the separation and acted out by refusing to help with household chores. This behaviour continued even after the couple decided to give their relationship another chance.

Seeing the strain the relationship was putting on the family, they decided to seek help in the form of counselling from the Family Counselling Centre of Brant. The councillor helped Steve's father understand that Steve needed recognition, quality time, and leadership. He began to show Steve changes he was making by looking for shared interests and doing things together. Steve responded well and began to help out around the house within a few weeks. He became a productive member of his family and grew to understand that the separation at the time was for the best. The Smith's family was able to rebuild relationships within their family from the support offered by the Family Counselling Centre of Brant. They demonstrate that change is possible and that together, they are strong.

Brant United Way is proud to have made a difference in The Smith's life. We continue to invest in people throughout our community to strengthen their individual capacity and that of Brantford, Brant County and Six Nations of the Grand River.
