About Brant United Way
Brant Food for Thought
All that kids can be.
Change starts in our community when people come together through Brant United Way to support programs and services that offer children in our community a better future. Together, we continue to help kids be all they can be.
The impact of a well-nourished breakfast on a child is extremely important to seeing success in the classroom. A lack of proper nutrition directly affects behavior, memory retention, absenteeism and tardiness. These common problems can be avoided with the assistance of Student Nutrition Programs from Brant Food For Thought. These programs provide a well-balanced snack or meal to students in schools.
For example, before a principal at a local school implemented a weekly breakfast program, he noticed some students were coming in cranky.
"The more we run this program, the more I realize that many behavior problems are food-related. It's not that it fixes everything, but it sure helps."
A local school secretary and mother saw improvement in overall attendance since the morning meal program began.
"It feels good to know that no student here goes hungry and that healthy snacks are being introduced to students who might not otherwise be aware of the best snacks to eat for energy and learning."
Specific successes include a 23% decrease in absenteeism in one month and a 35% decrease in absenteeism in the next month. Students are not only attending school but they are focused because their stomachs are full. Brant Food for Thought has been very supportive of its participants and of the school community, and through its efforts, have made a tremendous impact on the kids that need this program the most.
Brant United Way is proud to have made a difference in the lives' of students. We continue to invest in people throughout our community to strengthen their individual capacity and that of Brantford, Brant County and Six Nations of the Grand River.
